I know where my utility lines run in my yard. Why do I have to call before I dig?

In Ohio, before you dig in your yard, you must call the Ohio Utilities Protection Service. Digging in your yard, even if you are familiar with your utility lines, can be very dangerous, if not deadly. If you are planning work around your property involving trenching, grading, installing fence post, tilling, or digging of any kind, be sure to contact the Ohio Utilities Protection Service (OUPS) first.

You must call the OUPS at least 48 hours before digging (but no more that 10 days) excluding weekends and legal holidays.

To reach the Ohio Utilities Protection Service, call 800-362-2764 or 8-1-1.

If I sign up for Load Management, does that mean I have to take cold showers?

Load management is our way of reducing the amount of energy being used across the power grid during peak hours of demand. Demand peaks can occur at any time during extremely cold or hot weather - normally 5-9 p.m. and 7-11 a.m. pose the greatest potential for demand peak periods. During those hours, we suggest taking shorter showers and reducing hot water use to conserve the hot water already stored in you heater.

What can I do to make my house more energy efficient?

Here are a few inexpensive ways you can start saving money and helping the environment:

  • Upgrade light bulbs around the house to flourescent-type bulbs.
  • Check for hot or cold areas around windows and doors. If you feel a draft or an inconsistent change in temperature, you might need to have you windows and doors checked for proper sealing. A draft guard at the bottom of doors also may help.
  • Reducing general energy consumption. A very simple way to save energy is to turn lights off in unoccupied rooms or lowering your use of hot water.
  • Use Nature! During the summer, night can be very pleasant. Rather than running the air conditioning throughout the night, open the windows. In the wintertime, south-facing windows can let a lot of sunlight in the house. Open the blinds during daylight hours to let the sun warm your house.

Carroll Electric Cooperative also offers its members energy audits. Energy audits can give you a detailed report about energy usage and efficiency. To learn more, click here.
